Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA)
IRMAA is an additional surcharge that can be added to your Medicare Part B and Part D monthly premiums, based on your yearly income.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses your income tax information from 2 years prior to plan enrollment to determine whether you owe an IRMAA. The surcharge amount is determined by your income bracket and the way your taxes were filed. IRMAA surcharges are preset by SSA and bracketed by income level.

Appealing IRMAA Determination
In some cases, IRMAA determinations and surcharge amounts can be appealed. If you’ve had a life-changing event that reduced your household income, you can ask to lower the additional amount you’ll pay for Part B and Part D. If you receive a notice regarding IRMAA, and you believe you can appeal, contact the SSA or use the IRMAA Appeal Form below.
